Ethical Leader to Admire
A biographical tribute to Prof. Bashir Mohammed Osman Arbab, the Father of Gastroenterology in Sudan. Dr. Arbab graduated from the University of Khartoum Faculty of Medicine in 1962 and was among those closest to Professor Daoud in internal medicine. He pioneered the establishment of the Internal Medicine Department and introduced endoscopy to Sudan before flexible endoscopes arrived, performing examinations with rigid scopes at the University of Khartoum’s Ward D2 and later at the Modern Medical Center. Known for his exceptional clinical acumen — diagnosing from symptoms and physical signs alone — his devotion to patients, students, and Islamic values made him a defining figure of the Golden Age of Sudanese medicine.
